The Difference Between Generic and Branded Drugs
Before trying to draw out the differences between generics and brand-name drugs, we must first of all give a clear definition of a generic drug.
The active ingredient of “Generic” medication (for example, of “generic phentermine”, which is adipex) is chemically identical to the active ingredient of the correspondent medication. According to the FDA’s office Generic drugs “a generic drug is identical, or bioequivalent to a brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use”.
Generic drugs are chemically identical to their branded counterparts, they are sold at substantial discounts from the branded price. According to reliable sources, generic drugs save consumers an estimated 8 to 10 billions USD a year at retail pharmacies. Even more billions are saved when hospitals use generic drugs. Because generic drugs are often much cheaper than their branded counterparts, many people choose generics whether buying drugs online or in traditional retail outlets and many insurance companies actually require that they be used.
However, it should be noted that current regulations permit a variation of approximately 20% either way in the bioavailability of the active ingredient. This does not necessary mean that buying generic drugs in preference to branded counterparts is a bad idea. In fact, in most cases, it’s probably still a very good idea.

Internet is rapidly transforming the way we live, work and shop in all sectors of the economy. In the health sector, internet permits individuals to obtain extensive medical information, to help them understand health issues and treatment options. Millions of people all around the world used internet year to find medical information. The sale of most consumer products over internet has grown rapidly in recent years, including the sale of prescriptions drugs. Purchasing prescription drugs online can provide tremendous benefits to consumers. These benefits are many and include:
- Access to prescription drugs for the disabled or otherwise homebound, for whom a trip to the pharmacy can be difficult;
- The convenience of shopping 24 hours a day;

They can provide detailed information on drug interactions, and may e-mail customers if the drug they ordered has been recalled, a cheaper generic version of the drug becomes available or to remind them on prescription renewals. Hyperlinks and search programs provide online customers with written product information and references to other sources of health information more easily than traditional stores.

Do Drug Companies put side effects into their drugs on purpose to create demand for other drugs?
Also, Chris Rock made a good point. Drug Companies never research a cure for a disease, which doesn’t make money, they only treatment.
Considering all these ridiculous side effects for many of the prescription drugs, maybe they’re putting additives and side-effects into their drugs on purpose to generate demand for other drugs to treat those side-effects.
being a fan of many conspiracy theories involving giant corporations… this is one that has been proven over and over again however is not really publicized because lets face it, the truth hurts. Chris Rock is right, and the whole idea behind anarchy is – what is anybody gonna do about it? You’re talking about changing the status quo which is an oxy moronic contradiction. Unless you have power and money, you can’t change much of anything on your side of the spectrum. Anyways, to make a long story short, watch the movie Sicko by Michael Moore, you’ll see how corrupt it gets.
with changes in health insurance laws will my under 26 year old children be covered?
I am hearing on the news that 26 year olds should now be covered under parents plans regardless of being in school or not. However, a friend told me that this does not apply if the coverage is "self insured" but only if fully funded. Our insurance is with Cigna, but it is with my husbands employer and have been told that is "self insured". So will my 22 year old who is not in school be covered or not? He has been covered until now because he was in school, but not going this term or next.
Disclaimer: I have NOT read the entire plan.
But the parts I’ve read, I haven’t seen a differentiation between a "qualified self insured" plan, and a "qualified group insurance" plan.
You will need to call Cigna and ask – but I strongly suspect you can add him during open enrollment if he’s already been dropped.
Defective Drugs – Better Quality of Life or Lies?
We trust our physicians to prescribe us with only the best medications; ones that will cause little to no ill side effects and help us recover in a timely fashion. However, often due to no fault of our doctors, even FDA approved medications are found to be defective, resulting in personal injury and the wrongful death of its victims.
Defective drugs cause the death of thousands each year and the serious injury of close to half a million. Manufacturers claim to spend large amounts of money to test these drugs, so how do they make it onto the marketplace? The answer is sometimes negligence and sometimes deliberate deception on the part of the behemoth pharmaceutical companies:
· A drug is not thoroughly tested
· Unsuspected side effects occur
· Test results are overlooked
· Test results are concealed
· Important questions are not asked, sometimes deliberately
· Prescribed for the wrong reasons
What Drug Categories Are Defective?
Drugs are designed to aid us in recovery or allow us to lead healthier lives, but there are defective drugs found in every drug category.
· Erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra have been found to cause a drop in blood pressure and NAION, which is a loss of vision
· Diet drugs often cause more harm than good in countless ways
· Hormone drugs cause tragic complications such as stroke, blood clots and death
· Anti-depressants such as Paxil have been linked to an increase in suicide and birth defects
· Pain killers like OxyContin are highly addictive and subject to abuse
This is not to say that every drug in every category is defective though. But you should give great consideration to possible risks and unforeseen side effects before taking a new prescription drug that will supposedly better your quality of life.
Recent Drug Recalls
While you are eligible for compensation for past defective drugs, it’s the most recent recalls that should signal an alarm bell if you or a loved one had been prescribed to them.
Some recent drug recalls are:
· Heparin–improper labeling and defective manufacturing procedures led to dozens of injuries and deaths as a result of this blood thinner
· Digitek–insufficient quality control led to pills being released with twice the effective dose of this heart arrhythmia medication
· Trasylol–an anti-hemorrhagic drug, this medication is highly toxic to the liver and may have led to as many as 1000 deaths a month at the height of its popularity
· Vioxx – The biggest recall in recent memory was due to Vioxx. Designed to treat acute and chronic pain, arthritis sufferers raved about its benefits. In the years following its approval in 1999, studies found that Vioxx increased the risk of heart attack and stroke
· Fen-phen – A diet drug also known as Redux or Pondimin, Fen-phen was recalled in 1997 due to an increased risk of developing PPH, which can lead to higher blood pressure and heart failure
· Rezulin – An anti-inflammatory that has been found to cause hepatitis
· Baycol – 52 fatal cases of renal failure have been linked to Baycol, which was used to lower cholesterol
· Phenylpropanolamine – An appetite suppressant that has caused strokes and is used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine
Have You Been The Victim of Defective Drugs?
It’s a tragedy that even with oversight from the FDA that defective prescription drugs still leak through and seriously harm or kill its victims.

What is the difference between drugs and gateway drugs?
It there a difference? What are drugs and what are gateway drugs? I need this for school so please help me. Also I need some examples of drugs and gateway drugs!
The definition of a gateway drug is a lower class drug that leads people to try more "hard drugs". The most common example is marijuana/cannabis. The current propaganda that’s going around states that if you do marijuana you’re more likely to do something like coke or heroin or another of the "hard drugs".
What they don’t tell you is how many people smoke marijuana who NEVER do any harder drugs. Of course people who use drugs are going to start small and work their way up. It doesn’t mean that people can’t use the less harmful, non-addictive drugs responsibly.
Off my soap-box now. I hope the link below helps you with your research.
