The morning after the House passed the health care reform bill 220-215, with the lone Republican vote from Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao of Louisiana, McClatchy Newspapers’ Steve Thomma comments that Cao is “probably a one-term Congressman anyway” and alleges Cao “cut a deal with the White House” in making the vote.

Harry Reid has bought the 60th vote to pass health care by making a deal with Sen Ben Nelson of Nebraska for the federal government to pay for any medicaid increase his state has from health care FOREVER. The language in the bill is worse than in the beginning when Nelson took the high road and witheld his support. Sen Nelson from Fla got a guarantee to keep all his seniors health care advantage while the other 49 states will recieve DEEP cuts to that program. Sen Landreui from Louisiana got 300 million dollars for medicaid for her state for her vote. As for the first time in American history the bill mandates EVERY american to have health Insurance. It looks like the original bill that Reid leaked was dead last week is back, and what he’s been working on in secret was a 383 page managers amendment. The reason for the leak was probably to stop the groundswell of opposition that was coming in. Rep Stupak of the house is beside himself, because his bill guaranteeing subsidided people can not get abortions with comingled government money probably will be lost in the recociliation between bodies; which Nancy Pelosi promised him that would’nt happen. Reid should be brought up on RICCO charges and should not be above the law!

More news on the healthcare front — several states are suing to overturn the health care law signed by President Barack Obama and are simultaneously seeking to claim their share of subsidies to cover medical costs of retired employees. The AP reports a White House Administration official announced that, “seven states suing the federal government are among 16 already approved for subsidies to help with the healthcare costs of early retirees.” This includes: Arizona, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska and Nevada. This has become a growing concern for those who are quickly approaching retirement age. The AP reports that approximately 2000 employers have been approved — which primarily spans the private sector. The health care law provides $5B to aid employers in maintaining healthcare coverage for early retirees. This covers those age 55 and older but are no eligible for Medicare yet. The retiree assistance is only a temporary measure. Payments are scheduled to stop in 2014. The AP reports that this is “when the law calls for competitive insurance markets to open, and eligible individuals can get government tax credits to help pay for premiums.
